Kelly C. Lear, M.D. is a Coroner and Forensic Pathologist for the Arapahoe County (Colorado) Coroner’s Office, which is accredited by the National Association of Medical Examiners. She was elected as Coroner for Arapahoe County in 2014, and from 2004 to 2014 served as Deputy Coroner/Forensic Pathologist with the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office. Dr. Lear earned her undergraduate degree in Biology, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology from Cornell College, and subsequently received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center School of Medicine. She is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Forensic Pathology, having completed her Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency and Surgical Pathology Fellowship at the University of Colorado Hospital and her Forensic Pathology Fellowship at the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator.
Dr. Lear has been an active member of the Colorado State Child Fatality Prevention Review Team since 2005 and is a member of the Arapahoe County Child Fatality Prevention Review Team and the Arapahoe County Not One More Child Community Coalition. Nationally she has served on the American Board of Pathology Test Development and Advisory Committee, the Academic Forensic Pathology Journal Editorial Board, the Sudden Unexpected Death in Childhood Medical and Investigative Advisory Board, and numerous committees with the National Association of Medical Examiners. She is a member of the Governor’s Expert Emergency Epidemic Response Committee, North Central Region Fatality Management Committee, Tri-County Health Department Healthcare Coalition, and Tri-County Overdose Prevention Partnership. Dr. Lear is a Fellow of the National Association of Medical Examiners and College of American Pathologists and is a member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. Teaching activities include academic appointments as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and as an Associate Clinical Professor with Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine. In addition to teaching medical students and residents, Dr. Lear lectures regularly to a wide variety of audiences and has numerous peer-reviewed publications in nationally and internationally recognized journals.
